Hi there, I am Dr Sarah Butterworth, I am a chartered clinical psychologist and have worked in mental health services since 2007, qualifying with a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Birmingham in 2020. I am passionate about early intervention and enjoy working with infants, children, and young people. I specialise in women’s health and mental health, including perinatal work focusing on issues such as conception, the fertility journey, pregnancy, birth planning, and postnatal mental health, as well as parent-infant bonding.
I have experience working with a range of difficulties, including mood disorders, OCD, psychosis, trauma, selective mutism, perfectionism, self-criticism, emotional regulation difficulties, certain eating disorders, and neurodivergence. I work with school-aged children, adults, and parents with infants.
I take a compassion-focused approach to my work and provide a safe space for people to be heard, understood, and to make sense of their difficulties. Building rapport and a strong therapeutic relationship is very important to me, and I always strive to ensure the best outcome for my clients. The models I use may include evidence-based treatments such as EMDR, CBT, CFT, trauma-focused CBT, integrative work, or counselling. For parent-infant work, I may use attachment interventions such as Circle of Security. I also undertake birth preparation work, including anxiety management for labour, trauma-informed birth plans, and postnatal mental health support.
